Peptides in a facial serum: what you need to know

Sérum visage Calmveil NEYA Pure aux peptides, 30 ml

After hyaluronic acid, peptides are among the most sought-after ingredients in facial serums. But what exactly are they, and what can you reasonably expect from them? Here are the essentials, without jargon.

What are peptides?

Peptides are short chains of amino acids, the “building blocks” that make up proteins. The skin naturally contains them. In cosmetics, peptides are selected for their properties on the appearance of the skin.

In an ingredient list (INCI), they can often be recognised by the word Peptide in their name (for example Palmitoyl Tripeptide, Acetyl Hexapeptide…).

Why are they found in serums?

Peptides are valued in facial skincare to help visibly smooth the appearance of fine lines and give the skin a suppler, plumper look. They are generally well tolerated, which means they can be used every day, morning and evening.

They are mainly found in serums, whose fluid, concentrated texture suits this type of ingredient well, often combined with moisturising actives.

Peptides and hyaluronic acid: a complementary duo

The two ingredients do not play the same role:

  • Hyaluronic acid helps retain water and hydrate (learn more about hyaluronic acid).
  • Peptides are chosen for their effect on the appearance of the skin, notably the visible smoothing of fine lines.

That is why they are often found together. Calmveil Serum combines peptides, hyaluronic acid, aloe vera and sodium PCA in a light texture.

What can you expect?

A peptide serum is not a “miracle” product and does not replace a medical procedure. Used regularly, as part of a complete routine, it contributes to smoother-looking, more comfortable skin. As with any skincare product, results vary from person to person, and regularity matters more than the amount applied.

How to use a peptide serum

  1. Cleanse your skin, for example with a gentle cleansing oil such as Calmveil Cleanser.
  2. Apply a few drops of serum to the face and neck.
  3. Continue with the eye cream.
  4. Finish with a moisturiser, then sun protection in the morning.

The serum can be used morning and evening. To learn more about the order of the steps, see our guide In what order should you apply your skincare?

In summary

  • Peptides are short chains of amino acids used in cosmetics.
  • In a serum, they help visibly smooth the appearance of fine lines.
  • They combine very well with hyaluronic acid, which provides hydration.
  • Regular use is key.
